Guys, looking for a little help here...
I'm getting my first dive into the storage server world going...learning a lot. Got an old PC from work (overkill...dual 3 Ghz Xeon's, 2 GB RAM), got a PCI-X 8 port SATA card for it and 3 WD 1.5 TB green drives (for now...space for 5 more later in this chassis). This PC also had a license for WinXP tied to it, so I did a fresh install of that and got it up and going.
I want to use this as a media drive for my HTPC. So, FlexRAID-View is very very desirable for me. Got both FlexRAID and FlexRAID View going (build 6), and it seems to be working okay without crashing any more (had to reduce threads to 1 to get it to stop dumping on big files). Along with all this, I upgraded to an Asus RT-N16 GigE/WirelessN router.
I'm not really impressed with my data speeds. With my Win7 Home Prem laptop plugged into the GigE (server is plugged into GigE too), when writing a big file from my laptop to the server, I only get around 20 MB/s write speed. Not terribly impressive. I was expecting more. Is this just because Windows is a big piece of junk? If I want better transfer rates, do I need to jump to Linux for the server?
